چکیده

The start of the 21st century, with its confluence of scientific and technological sophistication, presents a unique opportunity for robotics to positively impact human quality of life. Significant and growing societal needs include the lack of personalized one-on-one care for the growing populations of elderly individuals, children with developmental disorders, and those with special life-long cognitive and social needs. Developing systems capable of contributing to such application domains in human everyday life require great strides in the domains of assistive robotics and human-robot interaction (HRI). Our research work in the Interaction Lab at USC focuses on socially assistive robot systems with rich HRI models that can be validated, tested and evaluated in real-world settings, involving human subject users from relevant beneficiary special-needs populations, including children and the elderly, and spanning a broad range of application domains, including elder care, aging in place, post-stroke rehabilitation, special education, and social and developmental disorder therapy.

Reflections on the Design Challenges Prompted by Affect-Aware Socially Assistive Robots

The rising interest in socially assistive robotics is, at least in part, stemmed by the aging population around the world. A lot of research and interest has gone into insuring the safety of these robots. However, little has been done to consider the necessary role of emotion in these robots and the potential ethical implications of having affect-aware socially assistive robots. In this chapter...

Socially Assistive Robotics for Personalized Education for Children

Introduction Socially assistive robotics (SAR) has the potential to combine the massive replication and standardization of computer technology with the benefits of learning in a social and tangible (hands-on) context. We are developing HRI methods for SAR systems designed to supplement the efforts of human teachers to personalize education in the classroom. This abstract defines and proposes so...

The Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) field for assistive applications focuses on how to provide long-term/lifelong social interaction for vulnerable populations (e.g., children with autism, post-stroke patients, and individuals suffering of cognitive impairments) [1]. Due to the sensitive nature of their interactions with humans, socially assistive robots need a thorough and targeted training, sim...

The Grand Challenges in Socially Assistive Robotics

Socially Assistive Robotics focuses on helping human users through social rather than physical interaction [1]. This paper describes the broad scope of socially assistive robotics, focusing on a general description of robotic technologies that have been and are currently being developed to assist people with disabilities. The paper then proposes the grand challenges of this field, and a list of...

Learning A Second Language with a Socially Assistive Robot

We created a socially assistive robotic learning companion to support English-speaking children’s acquisition of a new language (Spanish). In a two-month microgenetic study, 34 preschool children will play an interactive game with a fully autonomous robot and the robot’s virtual sidekick, a Toucan shown on a tablet screen. Two aspects of the interaction were personalized to each child: (1) the ...
